Happy Tuesday!  It was nice for us to be off yesterday. I wasn't coming in anyway, as I was already arranged to have the day off, but it was nice not to worry about sub plans, etc.

Turn It Up Tuesday!

I listen to Eric & Kathy on the Mix most mornings on my way in.  By the time I get to Beecher, it's static-y and fuzzy.  I usually switch over to Radio Margaritaville at this point.  Escape was just starting (The Pina Colada Song) and then it followed up with Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move on by Jimmy Buffett.  Both are not popular songs (you probably heard the Pina Colada Song), but they both have solid meaning with me.  It was a good music morning in the "i was cool once" minivan.  That in itself puts me in a good mood.

Happy Monday!  What's on your mind today? How was your weekend?

My weekend was good.  Our family was in town from Las Vegas for the funeral on Saturday.  Aside from the sad reason we were all together, we had really fun weekend!  I have a scary/funny story about our trip downtown on Friday.  Remind  me to tell you that one!

It was sad to say goodbye to everyone last night.  We had a great weekend.

Holiday season is upon us...and so is Christmas Cookie season!  Does your family make cookies?  Does your grandma?  My mom used to make a TON of cookies every year for the holidays.  I always intend on making a bunch and making little packages for friends and delivering them...but it happens maybe every few years.  I do make cookies every year, but sometimes not as much as others.  

I make some mean biscotti.  Everyone goes crazy over it.  I think it's kind of plain...but everyone loves it.

Thanksgiving Message...

Hello!  I'm obviously not in today.  The famous "Grammy Opal" is likely to pass away today at some point.  She is a WWII veteran and is very active with the Monee American Legion post.  Today, they will honor her with an honor guard ceremony in her room a the the hospice facility she is in. I'll be with my family today.

Here is a picture of Opal.  Isn't she just the cutest?  She's 94!  

Anyhow, PLEASE be good for the sub today. I know it's the last day before a 5 day break.  Try to contain yourselves :)

Multimedia 1 - Finish up the Black Friday assignment and turn it in.  Once you have that complete, find something QUIETLY to do.  Play some Thanksgiving Trivia! or...watch the Thanksgiving Episode

Multimedia 2  - Your Personal Narrative Movie Review is due TODAY.  This is worth a whole lot of SUMMATIVE points.  Make sure you finish and turn it in.  Unfortunately, my cabinet is locked today, so you will need to find some earbuds if you need them.

Yearbook - We will celebrate our November birthdays on Tuesday when we return.  Coordinate what you want to do and create a list of who is bringing what.  I will bring the tortilla chips and cheese.  If you want more than that, then you can all decide on it.  You can erase everything on the board.  If you make your list there, just make sure you write save next to it so the custodians don't erase it.    Also, we will work on the December calendar next week.  I need a group to volunteer for December and create the template.  Lastly, can someone take down my Cubs bulletin board outside my room? Skyler...let's use that area to advertise our Instagram challenge.  We will work on that next week.  You can always play some Thanksgiving Trivia, as well as watch the Thanksgiving Episode

Oh yeah...I forgot today's BLOG question.  Are you going shopping on Black Friday??  Where are you headed?  What are you shopping for?  

As I said, I am not a fan of stores being open on Thanksgiving, but I will probably head over to Target at some point Thursday night and pick up a few things.  We are in a hockey tournament all weekend in Niles.  Target is only 5 minutes from my house. so I'll just get that out of the way Thursday night. I'm not standing in lines and fighting over the last TV or any of that nonsense. I'm looking for some new boots during the BF sales.

No, we usually don't blog on Thursdays, but we won't be here half of next week.....

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, what are you thankful for?  

I'm thankful the obvious family, friends, etc.  I'm also thankful for my job.  I LOVE what I do and I really think I'm so lucky to have a job that I love.  

I'm thankful for being lucky.  Lucky that I get to live somewhere that isn't war-torn.  I don't fear for my safety on a daily basis, etc.  

I'm also thankful for Star Wars (Chewbacca), Manatees, the Cubs, Diet Dr. Pepper, Sunshine, comfy shoes, and TJ Maxx.  Those are a few of my faves...so I had to include them.

Tasty Tuesday! Thanksgiving Edition

Thanksgiving is about family, friends, football, and.....food!  The big day!  I always enjoy reading the answers to this question each year.  It's interesting to read about their traditions. Do you have turkey?  Ham?  Lasagna? It never occurred to me until recently that some people don't even eat turkey on Thanksgiving.  Whaaaa????  

So....what's on your table every year?  What are you looking forward to most?  

The Cal's are traditionalists.  There will be turkey.  

What am I looking forward to?  GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE.  This makes the people in my house GAG.  Green Bean Casserole is my jam, though.  I make sure all those crunchy fried onion things get stirred IN the casserole and then I load them up on top, too! So good!

Hey, Hey!  How was your long weekend?  

Lots going on in the Calomino world!  Some good, some not so good.   Hockey wins, fun get-together with friends, ninja warrior birthday party, cookbook club fun....and then the not so good stuff.  Family health issues, injuries, cars that need to be replaced.  Stuff that I suppose you would consider adult-ing.  

But...it could always be so much worse, right?  I've got my positive pants on!

Election Day!

Today is Election Day!  After today, we can safely watch TV again!  After today,  my social media won't be blown up with political posts!  These are the little things I'm excited about.  It's also cool to be in a line that goes out the door at 6:15 in the morning with others who are exercising their right to VOTE.

How was your long weekend?  What did you do?  

My weekend was nice.  Usual weekend stuff, but with less pressure since we were off yesterday.  Watched the Cubs, watched my kids play their usual (flag football, baseball, hockey).  Spent yesterday hanging with my boys.  Donuts at County Line, photo shoot at the beach for Christmas cards, shopping at the outlet mall, lunch at Redamak's in Michigan.  Fun day.

And then I stayed up WAY too late watching the Cubbies.  They need to win tonight!

What's on your TV lineup?  What do you watch regularly?

I'm the only girl in my house.  This means there is ALWAYS some sort of sporting event on TV.   I don't really mind all that much, but I get annoyed with football and all the fantasy junk that goes with the 359 leagues my husband seems to be in.

When I do get the TV, I'm pretty boring.  The Goldbergs, The Middle, Criminal Minds, NCIS: New Orleans (which is an AWFUL show, but NOLA is my favorite place in the world....so I must watch).

Today is my 21st wedding anniversary!  
I have a lunch date with my husband at Portillo's.  I have a dr. appt. this afternoon, so I get to meet him for lunch beforehand.
I'm playing bunco tonight with my girlfriends.
My older son's first hockey game of the season is tomorrow.  I love hockey.  I love everything about it.  I love his team.  I love the families on our team.  I love yelling.  It's so much fun!

Winning Wednesday

What was the last good thing you won?  Prize?  Mean game of Uno with your Grandma?  Soccer game?

I don't really win much, but I play the scratch off tickets.  Every Monday (during the school year only) I buy $5 worth.  If I win, I get more tickets the next day.  If I lose, I'm done.  I think the most I've ever won was $30.  Sometimes I can get to Friday with my winners, sometimes I'm done on Monday.  I didn't play on Monday since I wasn't here, won $2 yesterday and then nothing today.  So...I'm done for the week :(

Good Morning!  As you have probably noticed, I'm not here today. Fever/chills/sore throat last night. I was down for the count. Yuck.  I'm feeling a bit better this morning, but still like garbage.  I'll be back to fill your day with sunshine tomorrow..ha!

Production - Sorry, Tuesday crew.  No news broadcast tomorrow, so you don't need to film today.  My iPad with the teleprompter app is with me, and there won't be enough time to edit something when I come in tomorrow morning. We can use whatever "special" you had planned for either next Tuesday's broadcast or for the Friday show.  Use today to work on your broadcast this week and the Friday show.  NO need to leave the classroom.  You can work in the room planning today.

Today's blog - Tell me about your weekend!  Was it good?  What did you do?  Friday night we went out for dinner for my birthday, then had friends over.  Saturday was filled with the usual...flag football, hockey and baseball.  Was going to go low key Saturday night, but wound up going to our friend's house and we had a "YouTube Patio Party".  They brought their big screen out on their patio and we basically watched music videos from the 80's and SNL skits.  Not going to fib, it was fun!  Sunday was busy, but not anything exciting.  Religious Ed, Mr. Cal had a couple of softball games, dinner with my in-laws.  They head back to Arizona for the winter this week, so we said our good-byes.

Feel Good Friday! Birthday Edition

Happy Friday, Peeps!  It's my birthday, so it's automatically a good day!

Birthdays are fun.  I try to make a big deal about them, because it's "YOUR" day.  Everything should be great your birthday and you should get everything you want.  I know that sounds a bit rainbows and unicorns of me, but it's how I roll.  

Do you have any birthday traditions?  Do you get to pick dinner on your birthday?  Do you get to pick a cake?  In my house, the Birthday Fairy comes (delivers balloons and decorates house) and we have birthday cake for breakfast.  There is also the "Birthday Box".  It's just a Ninja Turtles box that gets filled with gifts.  That's what our family does.

Growing up, I always got a big jar of olives and a bag of dried apricots.  Those are fave things of mine and my mom always wrapped some up for my birthday each year.  My cake every year was confetti angel food with pink frosting.  My mom passed away almost 21 years ago, so that really doesn't happen anymore.  Last year, my friend Michelle recreated this on my birthday and it was the sweetest thing.

It's ONLY Wednesday.  Doesn't it feel like this week is dragging??  I totally feel like it should be at least Thursday! 

Today's WYR.....Would you rather find true love or $10 million?  

Call me shallow.  I don't care.  I'm all about the Benjamins when it comes to this.  I really think I could deal with a true "like" vs true love if I were loaded.  I really think I could.  Maybe at a different point in my life I would have thought differently, but not now.

National Anthem Protest

Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers sat out the National Anthem a couple of weeks ago in protest of police brutality against people of color.  

Thoughts?

I have mixed feelings on this.  Here are my general thoughts....

• I don't disagree with his right to peaceful protest.  
• I do disagree with him protesting at "work". 
• I disagree with the NFL for allowing this.
• I agree that there are crappy cops out there that do use brutality against people of color
• I do NOT think that of the majority of police officers.
• I do think that some people put themselves in situations that lend themselves to scrutiny.
• I do believe in white privilege.  Not in the sense that I have privilege, but in the sense that I have no idea what it is like to be a person of color.  

Motivational Monday

I've got a case of the "Monday's".  I'm just not ready for today.  Don't get me wrong, I did a ton of stuff this weekend to be ready for today.  However....I'm just not there.  Bummer.

Today's big question.... Would you rather be a doctor or a lawyer?  Why?

Lawyer.  Hands down, no question.  I've always said that if money, life, responsibility, etc. were no object, I would live in the French Quarter in New Orleans and go to Tulane University to study law.  I've always wanted to study law.  I don't actually want to practice law.  I just want to say I'm a lawyer.

Alarm didn't go off when it was supposed to this morning, so everything seems rushed.  I don't like it when that happens.  Especially on a Monday.

Pretty decent weekend for the Cal's.  Friday night we finished the season one of Stranger Things.  Have you watched this??  You MUST!  So good!

Saturday was full of flag football, hockey and baseball.  I scored some free tickets for Brad Paisley, so us and the BFF's headed over to Tinley for the evening.  Super fun concert.  I'm not a huge fan, but know enough to sing along and be entertained for the night.  Country artists are so fan-friendly.  At one point, I was less than six foot away from him.  Way cool.  I tried to upload video, but the file is too big.

We are already half way through the week.
We have an early release today.
I can get some work done in my quiet classroom.
Mr. Cal has a fantasy football draft tonight, so I'm taking my boys out for dinner.
There is supposed to be a nice storm that rolls through tonight.
The Cubs are on.

Tuesday - Hot, Hot, Hot!

Yikes, it's going to be HOT today.  Even my room isn't going to fare well in the building.  Hopefully they will let us go early either today or tomorrow.  We shall see!

How was your weekend?  What did you do?

Friday night we had a fire and had some friends over.  Saturday Mr. Cal and I headed up to Wisconsin to see Jimmy Buffett in concert.  Super fun!

Sunday we had a family party and then friends of ours were hosting a chicken wing cook-off.  Good times.  Yesterday, we hosted a fantasy football draft and had friends over for dinner.  I also managed to watch the first episode of Stranger Things on Netflix.  Have you seen this?

CNN Student News - How to study for the Friday Quiz!

So, it's Thursday.  Tomorrow is the first CNN quiz of the year.  How should you prepare??  Here's a guide on what to look for when studying.

I should say this - as long as you pay moderate attention during the news broadcasts during the week and invest maybe 10 minutes or so looking over the transcripts, you really should be fine.  I don't ask crazy, obscure questions and I don't try to make them difficult.  I promise!

CNNSN produces their shows a day in advance.  Usually, by 6PM or so, the next day's episode is available.  CNN puts out their own quiz on Fridays as well.  You can always get some good review by looking at those.

When I write the quizzes, I basically just browse the transcripts from each day that week.  Click HERE for CNN Student News.  Scroll through the page and find Archives (on right side of page as you scroll down).  Click on Archives and you will be able to access each show from the week in this area.  There is a link to each day's transcript within that day's page.

Would You Rather Wednesday!

Today is Wednesday - that means....Would You Rather Wednesday!  I have a deck of WYR cards that I choose from, but I'm always looking for suggestions.

Without further ado....

Would you rather have a photographic memory - OR - extra sensory perception (ESP)?

ohhhh....I'm not sure my brain could handle it being photographic.  It's on overload most of the time anyhow.  It would explode if I remembered everything.  I like the idea of having ESP.  I could be all Alice-y from Twilight.  I could stop tragedies from happening.  My luck, I would get stuck with the random ESP.  Like...I could be able to tell what color polo McCord will wear next Tuesday..haha!

Oh well...what do you think???

I've been married to Mr. Cal for almost 21 years.  We met when we were 16 and we were baggers at the Jewel in Dolton, IL.

I have two sons.  Jack (8th grade) and Nick (4th grade).  

So that's us.  My little family.  I don't have any siblings.  I'm an only child.  My parents are both deceased. :(

Today's Blog - What's on your Mind Monday!  What's on your mind today?  or...How was your weekend?  Tell me about it!

Nice weekend for me! Friday we had family over.  Saturday my husband and I played in a softball tournament with a bunch of Homewood Baseball coaches.  It was a super fun time!  

Yesterday I went to the beach.  Lesson planning for the week isn't so bad if you're doing it at the beach!

Today's question - We're a couple of days into the school year.  How are your classes?  What do you like?  What do you dislike?

My answer....

I feel pretty good about the year so far.  There really aren't any classes that I don't like.  I had a couple of classes last year that were kind of draining on me.  Not bad kids...just a bad dynamic.  I don't really see any of that this year and this makes me happy!

I'm just like you guys - I like to see who I'm in class with, etc.  It's a bit different for the teachers, though.  We just really get to see who we have our plan period with and who we have lunch with.  I lucked out this year.  I have lunch with Mrs. Compton and Mrs. VonAlven.  They are my peeps, so we were excited to have lunch together!
